Baby Registry Checklist and Must-Haves

Once you’ve decided where you’re doing your registry, you need to decide what items you’d like to add.  Anywhere you’ll register, you’ll be provided a checklist.  So that’s not the hard part.  What is extremely tedious is choosing the right products.  As mentioned in a previous post, I did the research by checking out reviews, testing out products at stores, and now that my baby is 9 months old, I can say I’ve put most of them to the test :)  The right products for my baby may not be the right ones for yours, which is why I’ve provided some feedback and also a link (under the product column) for you to check out and decide for yourself.

Below, I’ve taken a generic checklist, broken it down, and added a few details about the products I chose.  I’ll also rate the product on a 1-5 star scale (5 being the highest).  I won’t go into too much detail here, as I plan to review each product in its own respective blog post.

Travel Systems and Carriers

Car Seat
4.5
We bought this because it came with our stroller.  Easy to use.  Pretty heavy! But I learned that heavy is important for security.
Stroller
5
We’re all about ergonomics.  This is it! Serves as light weight stroller and travel system, takes up little room when folded.  Easy to use.  Will be doing a thorough review soon!
Convertible Car Seat
--
Haven’t used it yet, but got this for its outstanding reviews in terms of safety.
Carrier
2
Uncomfortable—weight isn’t balanced when holding baby. Ended up returning.
Carrier
5
Balanced weight throughout.  New item in the states.  Comparable to Ergobaby but much more affordable.

Infant Swing
3.5
My reflux baby was heavily dependent on this swing but it did squeak sometimes, which I found pretty annoying.  Also, it isn’t easy to clean if there’s a leak.
Play yard
4
I borrowed this from my sister, otherwise I would’ve purchased one with higher ratings.  Twice one of the arms collapsed which is   pretty dangerous.  Overall, it functions well and is easy to put together and take on trips.
Play mat
5
Its no suprise this got such high ratings. Definitely one of the top baby items on my list!
Infant Toys

5
This toy goes everywhere with us! Keeps my little one busy, where she otherwise may be fussing.
Infant Toys

I just ordered this based on reviews.  Waiting to test it out!
Jumper
5
It’s hard to keep her entertained for long, but this keeps her busy while I do other things.

Diapering

Diapers
3.5
Great for absorbing wet ones, especially over night, but was horrible for those poop blowouts! I wouldn’t suggest putting diapers on your registry.  You have to see what suits your baby—trial and error.
Diapers
5
Great for holding in poop because of the ruffled back!
Baby Wipes
5
I’ve tried many brands, and honestly, these work the best.  Huggies is perforated which makes it difficult to separate.
Diaper Cream
5
This is the best for rashes and for daily use! It really beats the rest.  Also, no need to buy the baby version.
Diaper Pail
4.5
You’ll see, disposing of diapers and the horrific smell is every parent’s dreadful nightmare.  By far, the best out there, but could use some tweaks.
Diaper Bag
4
Great bag for its price.  It really is much easier than most bags that require you to empty your bag for a simple diaper change.  There are a few minor flaws.  If you’re looking to spend a lot more, then I’d recommend Ju-Ju-Be B.F.F. Diaper Bag.  Definitely pricey!

Crib bedding set
Handmade by my mother-in-law
5
I wanted something unique, but what I found on Etsy was out of my price range ($400), so I bought the same fabric and had my MIL replicate it.
Changing table pad
5
Excellent.  Fits standard changing tables and the dip keeps baby from rolling off.
Changing table pad covers
5
Perfect fit and soft.  I was advised to buy it in chocolate (for obvious reasons) but any color will do.
Changing Pad
5
I put this on top of my changing pad cover.  Seems excessive but saves you from washing everything after an accident.  Easy to hose down in the shower.
Swaddle Blanket
5
HIGHLY Recommend! Not a fan of receiving blankets.  You don’t have to keep rewrapping with this one.
Swaddle Blanket
2
She was able to break out from day one.  Velcro was very uncomfortable and clings to everything in the washer.
Wearable Blankets
5
Transitioning off the swaddle is yet another challenge.  This will solve your problem!
Receiving Blanket
5
I don’t use this for swaddling, but these are light and large blankets that I always have when we’re out, in case it gets cold.  Baby
won’t outgrow for a couple years.

Breast pump
5
All Medela pumps are great compared to other brands.  I used the single pump for some time in the beginning, but I prefer nursing.
Bra
5
HIGHLY recommend for those who are going to be pumping frequently.  You no longer need to sit there holding the pump till your hands go numb!
Nursing Pads
--
--
I can’t recommend these because I didn’t really need these myself
Nursing Cover
5
I’ve used this on many occasions.  Some great features
100% Cotton machine washable
Unique rigid neckline allows for ventilation, as well as direct eye contact with the baby
Terrycloth pocket detail for quick cleanup or storage of breast pads or pacifiers
Generous sizing keeps mommy completely covered during breastfeeding
Nursing Pillow
3
Comfortable, but despite positive reviews, it doesn’t work for reflux babies! You never know if you’ll have one of them! Ended up returning.
Nursing Pillow
4
Helped nurse reflux baby, but still a bit difficult to use with young baby. Now that she’s bigger, much easier to use.  Can also be used as a baby support pillow.
Bottle Starter Set
3
Difficult to measure because the ounce markings are so light! I would not buy these again.  Stuck with it because baby became used to it.  I would recommend a brand that fits your baby and definitely check out reviews.
Pacifier
5
My life saver! Innovative patented design permanently attaching the pacifier to the plush animal, prevents the pacifier from being lost, dropped or even forgotten!
High Chair
5
I have the original version of this, but would have purchased this because of the toy.  The one I have works great.  It’s lightweight and easy to fold and take wherever you go!
Bowls
5
Simple, light, and dishwasher safe
Spoons
5
Fun colors, easy to clean, dishwasher safe
Mash & Serve Bowl
5
Bought based on reviews.  Clever idea.  Simple way to include your baby at the dinner table.

Baby Bath Tub
5
Great for infants and toddlers! Fits perfectly in my kitchen sink.
Baby Bath Towels
5
Soft, cute, and ideal size.
Shampoo and Body Wash
5
Because shampoo and body wash is absorbed directly into the skin, I want to make sure that I’m using something that won’t harm my baby.  No sulfates, phthalates, petrochemicals and parabens.
Body Lotion
Aquaphor and Lubriderm combined
5
A pharmacist at Walmart gave me this advice.  My daughter had dry skin and eczema on her legs and it was immediately relieved with this combo.
Grooming kit
5
Very cute kit! Love the animal zoo theme!
Thermometer
4
Works fine so far, but has OK reviews.  Rectal is supposed to be the most accurate.
Humidifier
4
Looks cute, easy to clean, we used this in the winter, but its hard to say how well it worked.

Nursery

Crib
4.5
Affordable, attractive
Crib mattress
5
Affordable, good reviews, fits crib
Changing table
5
Goes with crib set, easy to use
Glider
4
Affordable, serves its purpose.  Although, I don’t find this a necessary item unless you usually nurse/bottlefeed in one room
Dresser
5
Fits perfectly into our nursery, good price.
Storage Bench
5
Great price.  Multipurpose
Hamper
5
I used this instead of a hamper because it’s a space saver.  This comes in many different colors and a very good price.  I bought two sets (4 bins).  I used 3 for the storage bench, and one as a hamper to keep under the changing table.
Closet organizer
4
This item really depends on your closet space.  Personally, I’d rather have more space for hanging clothes.

Safety

There are some important safety items you will need.  I cannot rate these just yet.  But here is a list:

  • monitor (there are many different types out there, but this really depends on your preference)
  • baby gates
  • outlet covers & plugs
  • cabinet & drawer locks
  • first aid kit

Clothing

I wouldn’t recommend spending too much on clothing or even putting too many clothes on your registry, but there are a few must-haves which you may not receive as gifts.  Remember to consider the season and the age of your child when putting these on your registry.  Another thing to keep in mind—you don’t want to plan for clothes too far ahead.  My daughter is much bigger for her age and many clothes that she received as gifts don’t fit her because they don’t align with the season.

  • sleepers for newborns, 0-3 m, 3-6 m, 6-9 m (I use these year-round)
  • socks (seasonal)
  • onesies (I prefer short sleeves because they don’t get too stuffy under sleepers in the winter and they work well for the summer as well)
  • caps (seasonal)
